Tips for your online classes

There is more to online Pilates classes than you think!

If I can name one good thing to come out of COVID, it is that fact that online Pilates was normalised. A lot of people have moved back into studios for their weekly practice, but a lot of people have kept the online option too.

At first we just replaced their usual time with online time slots and the relief was immediate. Staying at home due to an international pandemic does not mean that I need to give up my regular activities. But as life returned to its usual ways after covid, we quickly felt the comfort of the online session. Things like no traffic or parking issues or that you can 'watch' the kids and the dog while you do your workout, quickly made online classes more appealing than travelling into the studio.

And as more of our usual life styles returned we realised we can take our online classes with us when we travel for work or leisure. It is an absolute luxury not to have to loose momentum and progress every time a client has to go through a busy period at work or go away for a while for which ever reason. We can keep the quality of your movement practice going which has endless benefits in itself. Especially if your are going through a busy or stressful time, when your body will need the movement even more. I believe that a break can be very good for the body when it is due. But needlessly loosing momentum makes it hard to see consistent results. So this element was a game changer for my busier clients.

As more people found out about online sessions it became my special mission to meet people that need my teaching style and specific knowledge to restore their movement patterns. It is great to be able to reach people almost anywhere and team up. Those that do Pilates know that teaching styles and areas of special interests can vary a lot between Pilates teachers. Its great to know that those that value my input don't have to be location bound.

So, how can you make the most out of your online Pilates courses? Here are a few tips:

1. Create a dedicated space: Set up a designated area in your home where you can practice Pilates. Clear out any clutter and make sure you have enough room to move freely. Invest in a good quality Pilates mat and any necessary equipment to enhance your practice. I typically start my clients off with the minimum and then we get the props as needed later in their program.

2. Set goals: Determine what you want to achieve through your Pilates practice. Whether it's improving your core strength, increasing flexibility, or reducing stress, having clear goals will help you stay motivated and track your progress.

3. Stay consistent: Consistency is key when it comes to any fitness routine. Set a regular schedule for your Pilates sessions and stick to it. Treat your practice as a non-negotiable appointment with yourself. If it has to be cancelled make sure to catch it up in the same week if possible.

4. Listen to your body: Pay attention to how your body feels during each exercise. If something doesn't feel right or causes discomfort, modify the movement or seek guidance from your instructor. It's important to prioritize safety and avoid any potential injuries.

5. Stay engaged: While practicing at home may lack the social aspect of a physical studio, you can still stay engaged by joining online communities or participating in virtual workshops. Connecting with fellow Pilates enthusiasts can provide motivation, support, and a sense of belonging.
